What would your ultimate Candlemass live setlist be?

Post by Candlemass »

Greetings doomlovers,

If you could choose freely, what would the ultimate Candlemass live setlist look like?

No promises for the future, of course - but it is always interesting for us to see which songs you, the fans, would love to hear live. Old classics, deep cuts, forgotten gems, newer material, rare surprises… anything goes.

Post your dream setlist below!

You can make it realistic, completely impossible, short and crushing, long and epic! whatever would make the perfect Candlemass show for you.

A few ideas:
  • Opening song?
  • Final encore?
  • Must-have classics?
  • Rare songs you would love to hear?
  • Songs that should return to the set?
  • One unexpected surprise?
We are not promising anything, but we are listening.

Raise the candles, summon the doom, and show us your ultimate Candlemass setlist.

This setlist is perfect, I'd just add "Black Stone Wielder" and "Darkness in Paradise" 🎸

As much as I really love the old classic...

It's really dissapointing and a waste to see no newer songs in the setlist. I mean like 1 or 2,3 songs per setlist of newer stuff and keep rotating them. It s like the band stopped existing after Tales of Creation and that was in 1989 lol. The first albums are bangers, there is no arguing there...but those after are also bangers for many people.

I d love to see (in no particular order, more post 1989 stuff). I ll put some songs from each album which I'd like to see and think would work:

The Dying Illusion
Where the Runes Still Speak
Black eyes

Abstrakt Sun
I still see the black
Karthago

Black Dwarf
Assassin of the Light
Witches
Born In a Tank

Emperor of the void - this should be in every concert damn it!
Demonia 6 OR Destroyer
Of stars and smoke

Bleeding Baroness
If I ever Die
Hammer of Doom

Dancing in the temple
Psalms for the dead
Siren Song

Astorolus
Splendor Demon Majesty
Omega Circle !!

Scandinavian Gods
When Death Sighs
Angel Battle
Sweet Evil Sun

Obviously you need to keep in each gig some of the classics, so rotating these songs would be the only solution. One example in no order, would be something like this, some unremovable classics, some rarely sung live classics and few songs from the "newer" albums:

A Sorcerer's Pledge
Well of Souls
At the gallows end
Cry from the crypt
Darkness in paradise
Under the oak
Samaritan
A Tale of Creation
Emperor of the void
Dying Illusion
Assassin of the light
Psalms for the dead
Solitude

or

Mirror, mirror
dark are the veils of death
solitude
dark reflections
demon s gate
crystal ball
samaritan
abstrakt sun
black dwarf
witches
if i ever die
astorolus

or

solitude
samaritan
black dwarf
demon s gate
born in a tank
crystal ball
scandinavian gods
angel battle
omega circle
siren song
demonia 6
Where the Runes Still Speak
at the gallows end

Bottom line: there are plenty of good songs, hell, 99% of them are great, the rest are instrumentals and simpler. so it s hard to cram so many in 10-12 picks. ideally but not sure if it can be done, concerts should be longer and have more songs, maybe 16 with encore in total. but cmass songs are mostly long and not sure if that is feasible. I won t mention the band s physical capabilities as all of you are in your prime and young :)

I ve put some variants. It s a shame not to hear these songs in concerts and hell, you guys tour a lot so you can swap few songs in each, so that there is something from the other albums.

I d really like to hear johann on some other songs too, his voice would be fantastic and transform the songs in new ways...What about a live album too? but live with all the songs YOU DON T SING LIVE OR NEVER SUNG LIVE? ok not all...but the best from each album!

Cheers!

I have some suggestions for how you can organize the setlists:

1. For the next year the setlist can include only songs that you haven't play live (or played rarely): - please from Chapter VI ! -
This will also serve as a break from the classics, and you can return with the classics the year after that
(and create anticipation like tv shows where the second season is at a different setting!)

2. Have 2 days shows (like Omen did this year in Greece, and the Manowar EU tour next year)
where on the 1st day you play the classics, 2nd day other songs

3. Albums anniversaries setlist
(this can also be a 2 days show: 1st day album anniversary, 2nd day classics)

Opener: Demon's Gate. It would be interesting to see if, instead of opening with Marche Funebre followed by a more instant track like The Well of Souls or Crystal Ball, Cmass opened with the synth intro seen in the studio version before ripping into Demon’s Gate. Kind of like Leif’s original vision of having it be the first track on Epicus.
Dark Are the Veils of Death
At the Gallows End
Cyclo-F
Emperor of the Void
The Lights of Thebe
Into the Unfathomed Tower
Where the Runes Still Speak
Mourner’s Lament
3rd Child From the Sun/Popocatéptl
Thirst
Under the Oak
Closer: The Opal City+Embracing the Styx
Solitude of course is the perfect encore song. Would also be cool to hear a cover of ‘White Heat/Red Hot’ like Abstrakt Algebra did, but in the Cmass style.

I very much like the current state of affairs when it comes to setlists. If we're talking about something totally fantastical though... some of these aren't technically even Candlemass songs, but I would be a happy man if I were to hear them live. :D
